Lampwork glass beads and jewelry, interview with artist Linda Newnham

Handmade lampwork glass bead necklace by Linda Newnham

My guest this month in the series of interviews with bead artists is lampwork and jewelry artist Linda Newnham.

Linda started as a lampwork artist in September 2011 and her work has progressed immensely during this relatively short period.
She won the Glass Beadmakers UK Jewellery Category for 2014 with this gorgeous necklace called Circle of Fire. Needless to say I’m so proud she agreed to do this interview.

Interview

Q: Can you tell us a bit of  the beginning of your career as a lampwork artist. I’ve read that you were a florist in one of your previous careers. Was the transition difficult and why did you chose a different career?
A: Actually my last business was printing funny slogans onto babies and children's clothing which I operated from home and sold online. My lampwork just started as a hobby and I was fortunate enough to be able to sell the printing business last November so that I could concentrate on the glass and jewellery.

Q:  Why did you choose the medium glass? Recently you have start working with metal which you paint by hand. Are you planning to explore other materials as well in the future, like polymer clay, or ceramic?
A: I'd liked the fact that I could make my own beads. I had a go at making ceramic beads first but whilst I liked the beads I found the process very time consuming. I've also had a go at polymer clay, I've seen some fantastic work but I have to admit I'm not very keen on the feel. Glass is very tactile and the possibilities for design are endless, however I am always open to new techniques and am currently doing a fusing course and have an enameling workshop on Saturday.

Q: What inspires you in your work?
A: I get my inspiration all over the place but quite often it working with the glass that leads to new ideas, I might be making a bead and then an idea for developing it further pops into my head and I just have to try it.

Q: What does a typical day in the life of Linda Newnham looks like?
A: At the moment my day starts with checking my emails and orders whilst eating my breakfast. Then I usually head down to the allotment for a couple of hours. After lunch I usually clean the beads I have made the night before and if I am inspired I might pop upstairs to my craft room and make some jewellery. Evenings are for torching as long as it is not too hot as I torch in the corner of my conservatory.

Q: Is there a particular bead and/or jewelry artist you admire or who you consider a role model?
A: JC Herrell is a bead artist I admire enormously. Not only is she a very precise beadmaker and the best teacher I have had she also encourages positive thinking which is very much my ethos.

Q: You have won the Glass Beadmakers UK Jewellery Category for 2014. Do you have a next goal you want to accomplish?
A: Following on from the necklace I designed for that competition I am working on a range of jewellery on the theme 'Fire and Ice' that I hope one day to exhibit at a gallery.

Q: If you were not a bead/jewelry artist, what would you be doing?
A: Probably still printing t-shirts lol!

Q: Do you have a life motto and if so, would you like to share this with us?
A: Not particularly but I tend to be quite a positive person and rarely let anything beat me and I am always open to trying something new.

Q: Do you have tips, tricks or advice you like to share with us?
A: Well in terms of lampworking it would have to be practice, practice, practice.

Linda, thank you so much for this wonderful interview.
